Systematization of a Database of Patients with Chronic Otitis Media in a University Hospital

Abstract
Background: Chronic otitis media and its cholesteatomatous form constitute persistent inflammatory disorders of the middle ear, associated with structural alterations, hearing loss and an increased risk of complications. Eustachian tube dysfunction is a key component of the underlying pathophysiology. The ChOLE classification system and the ETDQ-7 questionnaire enable diagnostic standardization, functional assessment, severity stratification, evaluation of surgical outcomes, and facilitate comparisons across clinical and epidemiological settings. Objective: Systematize the data of patients with chronic otitis media and cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media of the Otolaryngology Department of Hospital Universitário Cajuru and classify them according to the ETDQ-7. Study design: A prospective longitudinal observational study was conducted. Methods: Administration of a structured data collection instrument encompassing clinical and epidemiological variables related to chronic otitis media, in addition to the ETDQ-7 questionnaire. Results: A total of 110 participants were included, 61.8% were female, with a predominance of individuals aged over 45 years. Otorrhea was the most frequently reported symptom (44.5%), followed by hearing loss (31.8%) and tinnitus (10.9%). Right-sided involvement was observed in 37% of cases, left-sided in 31.8%, and bilateral involvement in 30.9%. Regarding symptoms of Eustachian tube dysfunction-related, the highest median scores were observed for aural fullness, ear symptoms during upper respiratory tract infections, and muffled hearing. Conclusion: The establishment of this database constitutes a platform for advancing healthcare delivery, enabling comparative analyses, identification of prognostic factors, and offering critical insights into the characteristics of the study population. Clinical relevance: identification of patterns relevant to chronic otitis media management.
