Papilloma in the external ear canal: an uncommon location

Abstract

Squamous papillomas of the external auditory canal (EAC) are rare benign tumors, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which present epithelial proliferation. The main symptom consists of otic fullness and the sign of an irregular lesion with multiple fingerings in the EAC. In this case, a resection of the lesion was performed, followed by biopsy and chemical cauterization with silver nitrate. Computed axial tomography (CT) of the petrous bones revealed involvement of the cartilaginous portion of the canal. Subsequently, an additional resection was performed with a cold technique, curettage and electrocoagulation of the affected area, complemented by dressings with imiquimod. Nonavalent anti-HPV vaccination was indicated to reduce the risk of recurrence. Early detection and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent complications such as lesion proliferation or malignant transformation, and it is crucial to educate the patient about vaccination to avoid recurrences.
